Manufacturer Notes: 1980 Big League Chew introduced. While sitting in a bullpen one night, pitcher Rob Nelson and former NY Yankee all-star Jim Bouton came up with the idea for something different and fun to chew - shredded bubble gum in a pouch. Bouton approached Amurol Confections only to discover that they had already begun developing such a product. Nelson suggested the name "Big League Chew."

2006 Big League Chew became the rally gum for the Detroit Tigers during the 2006 season. This was due to starting pitcher Nate Robertson's habit of chewing a large wad of Big League Chew in the dugout when his teammates were up to bat. "Gum Time" as it was later referred to, has assisted in rallying the Tigers to victory on numerous occasions.

2007 In 2007, Wrigley celebrated baseball living-legend Cal Ripken Jr.'s monumental induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame with the launch of the "Big League Chew Live the Dream" promotion. The promo featured a one-of-a kind Big League Chew package immortalized with Cal Ripken Jr.'s signature and caricature likeness to be auctioned online for charity, and one grand-prize trip for four to the 2007 Hall of Fame weekend in Cooperstown, NY. A new Grape flavor was introduced the next year and strawberry followed in 1982. Big League Chew is currently available in Original, Grape, Strawberry, Watermelon, Sour Apple, Sour Cherry and Cotton Candy. According to the 2005 packaging, over 450 million pouches of the gum have been sold since 1980.
